Subject: re: Canada's report card on Physical Activity
I thought some of you might be
interested in this report that I received the other day. There are
some interesting stats that may help you in your understanding of
why you would put your family through a competitive sport be it
swimming, hockey, lacrosse, soccer etc. This research was conducted
by a group of recognized scholars and professionals in the area of
sport and leisure.
- First your children are above the
norm for Canadian children and youth involved in Physical Activity.
Canadian children as a whole received a D for being involved in
activities on a daily basis.
- Canada's children spent too much
time in front of a screen be it TV or a computer.
We have moved from a C- to a D- in the time that our children spend
looking rather than doing.
- Overall females are less involved
than males in physical activity.
What I really found interesting and
gave me motivation to keep our young girls active was the following
finding:
- There is a direct relationship
between involvement in sport and a child's sense of belonging and
self - esteem.
It was very clear that if a child was involved in sport, they felt
better about themselves and where they fit, so to speak.
- Fun is vital to helping our
children stay involved in sport
- Involvement in sport will
decrease the rate of children being overweight or obese.
- Children that are involved in
sport may show a marked decrease over the long run in health and
psychological problems in later years.
While I am sure none of this is news
to many of you I think that it bears witness to the fact that
despite the challenges being involved in sport often present, our
children benefit greatly from being involved.
